Wheel Hubs

A wheel hub assembly is a pre-assembled component that includes precision bearings, seals, and sensors and is in charge of mounting the wheel to the vehicle. The wheel hubs, also known as a wheel hub bearing, hub assembly, wheel hub unit, or hub and bearing assembly, is an essential component of your steering system that helps ensure the safe steering and handling of your car.

The majority of modern automobiles built after 1998 include a wheel hub assembly in each wheel. When an assembly malfunctions, it is removed and changed out with a fresh assembly. Prior to 1997, rear-wheel-drive vehicles used two separate bearings and seals in both front wheels, while front-wheel drive vehicles used wheel hub assemblies at each wheel.

The function of the wheel hubs

First and foremost, the wheel hub assembly secures your wheel to your car while providing free wheel rotation for safe steering.

Your traction control system(TCS) and anti-lock braking system (ABS) both depend on the wheel hub assembly. Hub assemblies also include the wheel speed sensor, which regulates the ABS braking system in your car. The sensor continuously transmits to the ABS control system the rate of rotation of each wheel. The technology uses the data to decide whether anti-locking braking is required in a heavy braking scenario.

How can I tell if my wheel hub assembly is defective?

When travelling between 50 and 70 Kph, the tires may growl, hum, squeak, chirp, or squeal as a sign that the wheel hub assembly is malfunctioning.

As you drive, the steering wheel can tremble.

If the sensor doesn’t read correctly or if the signal is lost, the ABS light will illuminate.
